EPIC JOURNEY FOR AJ280

Table Mountain

South Africa

Our subsidiary, FGW Generators completed the installation of a 280 kVA Standby Scania Powered generating set at the top of Table Mountain.

Table Mountain is one of the Wonders of the World and a major tourist attraction all year round, therefore security of power is a necessity for the restaurant and upper cable station located in excess of 1,000 metres above the Atlantic Ocean.

The generator being replaced was also Scania powered and had 24,000 hours of operation. The client was therefore more than happy to install to the same specification.

The installation brought a set of challenges. The cableway is closed annually for maintenance for two weeks, which was when the old set had to removed and new one installed. The set had to be disassembled to transport it within the cable car. A frame structure then had to be built to drop the disassembled set down a level and into the generator room.

Once in situ the set was reassembled ‘in the air’ while suspended from rigging equipment. It was then fastened on a 1,400 litre bunded base.

In addition to the aforementioned the Cape Town winter also played a part with four days lost due to inclement conditions.
